The Digestive System

  The Digestive System

Body system Function:  The Digestive system helps your body to digest food. When digestion happens food breaks down into small molecules called nutrients which are absorbed in the body. The Digestive process starts when the mouth takes in food which then goes to the esophagus than the stomach. After the stomach it continues in the intestine then the food leaves the body as waste.

Body  System Organs The 3 major organs of the Digestive system are the esophagus, the stomach and the intestines(small and big intestines).

Esophagus: The esophagus is a long tube that connects the throat and the stomach. After the food enters the mouth it goes to the esophagus. Then the food travels down the esophagus to the stomach.

Stomach:The main jobs of the stomach is to store and break down food. The stomach turns to make gastric juice to help digest the food.Food that has been broken down in the stomach is called chyme.

Intestines: Intestines are organs shaped like long tubes. They help break down food so the body can use it for energy.Intestines also remove waste from the body.First it's the small intestine and then the big intestine which is shorter but wider than the small intestine.

Interactions with other systems: The digestive system works closely with the circulatory system to get absorbed nutrients distributed throughout the body. While the digestive system collects and removes undigested solids the excretory system filters compounds from the bloodstream and collects them in urine.

Slide: Refer to outline                                    Analogy
The Digestive system is like a Water park. The mouth is like a pool that collects all the food. The throat/esophagus is like a water slide because all the food slides down the throat. The stomach is like a hot tub cause the acid is like the hot water. The small intestine is  like a water vacuum cause the small intestine sucks up nutrients and a water vacuum  sucks up water. The large intestine is like a water drain cause they both absorb water.
